New Seating in Classrooms: Different, more comfortable seating for students

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]tudents in classrooms complain of having to sit in classrooms all day. A story from ideas demco about changing the seating in classrooms is, “With 7 different types of seating available, it took about 2 ½ weeks for students to try all of them.” She gave students many different options. The story continues, it states, “It became obvious after the first several months that students could handle working with their friends, and we eliminated the signs. I had a few issues with students not being able to focus, but when I did, I simply asked the student to move to a new spot with his or her comfy seating. It wasn’t a problem because they couldn’t argue with my philosophy that students should be able to be comfortable and learn at the same time.¨ There was some problems that occurred but they could be resolved. She says, ¨I was able to get more teaching done, and the students were able to get more learning in, as they quickly got ready each day so as not to lose their choice spots.” You can see how it changed her classroom. More of the story states, “We eliminated another 6–8 desks. Collaboration and neatness came into play for those sharing storage space. Desks were becoming a place to work instead of “homes” for individual students. We finally had only 6 desks out of the original 30 by mid to late September.” Students would not need desks anymore if everyone could try out making this change.

One reason why there should be different seating options in classrooms is, seating in classrooms are very uncomfortable for students to sit in all day. An article from Edutopia states, “Classrooms today are twentieth century adaptations of the schools in the original colonies.” Desks have stayed the same from how they were originally made and have not been changed sense. In the same article from Edutopia they say, “Most mainstream educators at the time it was developed were unconvinced that change was needed, and schools remained as they had always been.¨

People have tried to change the way desks are but schools came back and said they do not think it is a problem that needs to be fixed. Many students would disagree with that fact.

Students do not want have to sit in the desks all day long because they makes it hard to work when you are uncomfortable. Also teachers want students to pay attention when they are teaching but when the desks are uncomfortable students can’t focus and they have a hard time concentrating on what the teacher is saying. Kids want to get their work done and would be glad if they could. Edutopia reports, “The most basic comfort-related amenity is soft seating, and there’s no longer any justification for the hard chairs on which students have to sit several hours each day.” Getting new seating in classrooms would help students get their work done and listen during class. Which would lead to helping them get better grades.

People think that students do better when sitting in desks. They think that students sit still in desks because they cannot move around. They also think that students focus better sitting in a desk. All these things are not true. Some students are always moving abound in their desks and cannot sit still so they have a hard time in school. Many students would benefit from having somewhere where they do not have to sit still all day. A article from ideas states, “Students choose where they sit daily, but wherever they choose to sit, it has to help them be their best learning self.” The students get to pick where they sit but it has to be a good option for them. It would help many students who cannot sit still pick where they get to sit.

We can have new seating options that students chose, but still a place where they can write and do their work. Students are the ones who know what it is like to sit in a desk all day. They should be the ones who get to pick the seating.

Teachers should also get to pick because they know when the students are able to concentrate and focus. They are the ones who have to teach the students in their classrooms.

In many classrooms, teachers are already starting to change the seating and are having positive results from it. They are changing their classrooms to comfortable seats so more of their students can learn better. The teachers are seeing the impact it can make on students.

The seats that students pick can be tried out in a few classrooms to see how they work. We can test all the negative and positive things and if there is more positive changes more classrooms to the new ones. If it does not work well people can try a new idea until they get better where the seating works good in classrooms. An  article from The Atlantic states, “In the future, we won’t have “classrooms.” If we change the seating in classrooms it will not be considered a classroom anymore because it will be a place where students want to be. Getting different seating in classrooms would be better for students in many ways.
