It’s Time to”Take The Power Back”: A probe into the greatest music genre in the world.

[dropcap]H[/dropcap]eavy metal is one of, if not the Best music genre of all time. Since the 1980’s heavy metal and hard rock have sunk to the bottom of the music charts being replaced by genre’s such as rap, or hip hop some of which can hardly be classified as music. Metal is one of the only genres that uses bad or controversial topics to help or motivate people against those topics.  Genres like rap are a disgrace to singers like Corey Taylor, Ivan Moody, or James Hetfield who use their natural talent and don’t need autotune to sound even remotely decent. Metal is one of the only genres that uses bad or controversial topics to help or motivate people against those topics.

Metal and Rock are some of the only actual Music genres left.

Heavy Metal, and Rock are some of the last few genres that actually use real guitars and drums to make real music rather than the computer generated garbage in most if not all rap and hip hop.

Singers and all members of most Metal and Rock bands are insulted by the excessive use of autotune and other electric voice modulators and/or music generators, because they are basically spitting in the faces of people who work to make those same kinds of music or just naturally sound good without the need of any electric help. You should not be a musical artist if you can’t even make music without cheating and changing it completely.

Metal Artists Quotes against Rap and Pop.

  • Here is a quote by Corey Taylor of Slipknot/Stonesour in an interview with Loudwire. “I feel like I’m being stung by 1,000 bees all at once,” Taylor tells us. “It’s so Auto-Tuned and it’s so beat corrected and it’s so canned and processed and lifeless. You might as well be listening to a f—ing piece of wood at that point. It bothers me because I put so much into everything I do. I put so much into my music, I bleed for it, I die for it every goddamn night. To watch these people basically let a computer go through the motions and do all the work for them, it’s insulting to everyone out there who has more talent and less attention.”

  • Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch went on a rant live in West Chester. “Let’s make one more statement, right now! F*ck Kanye West! Yes, I f—ing said it and I don’t regret it”.  Read More: Five Finger Death Punch’s Ivan Moody Rant.
  • Even some Rappers dislike common rap such as Witt Lowry who says in his song “Numb” Nowadays rap sound like shit. and Aren’t you mad there’s no passion in the music you’re playin.

Drug use in metal songs compared to Rap.

  • Heavy Metal refers to drugs in songs all the time, a few examples being, “Love and Meth” by Korn, and “Opium Of The People” by Slipknot as songs against drug use or stories about previous use, or another song by Korn “Take Me” which is in the drug’s perspective of being addicting.  Where as Rap and Modern Country talk about using drugs like weed, cocaine, and ecstasy regularly.
  • Other cases like “This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I’m on This Song” by System of a Down are completely joke songs like most from that band.
  • Obviously there are some songs that are serious about drugs too, like “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne which speaks of going crazy after an overdose.
  • In another song from Witt lowry “Dreaming With Our Eyes Open” He says Maybe I’d be in your mag If I added “Ti Chi” or “bap bap” Or I talked about weed when I rap, But fuck all of that. Implying that most modern Rap is popular because of the excessive use of drugs in the lyrics.

Good purpose behind Heavy Metal music compared to Rap.

  • Lots of Heavy Metal songs might be comical, but also many of them have good meanings behind them. The band Five Finger Death Punch (5FDP) has many songs about the rights that United States Military Veterans have, and deserve such as “Wrong Side of Heaven“. They also have songs about suicide prevention like “Coming Down“.
  • Also as stated above Bands like Korn, and Slipknot have songs about Drug prevention and the bad things that can and will come from using drugs.
  • Drug use isn’t the only issue that 5FDP covers they also have songs like “I Apologize” about alcoholism and how hard it is to overcome.
  • Even though most Rap has a bad purpose or none at all doesn’t mean that all of it does. Most of the songs the Rapper  NF sings are about his unfortunate background and how he was mistreated by his mother like in the song “How Could You Leave Us”

Politics in Metal and Rap.

  • Of the many Rock and Metal bands that sing about Politics there are many different views. The band Korn explains their point of view in the song “Politics” where lead singer Jon Davis literally states “I don’t give a F*ck about Politics”.
  • 5FDP has a song “Death Before Dishonor”  where lead singer Ivan Moody says ‘To the haters, the takers, the liars, all the vultures and the bottom feeding scum the FCC, the FBI and every tin god with a badge and a gun” talking about corrupt government officials and police.
  • Another song by Witt lowry “Piece of Mind 3”  where he Raps about how some will use their body for money and information.

Motives for making music.

  • Singers like Corey Taylor, or Jon Davis wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for music, they had drug issues before they started singing and both have nearly died many times.  Corey talks about this in another interview with Loudwire. “At age 15, Corey Taylor had already overdosed twice. Fast forward to age 18, Corey chose to take his own life. After overdosing on pills, Taylor was found by his girlfriend’s mother and rushed to the hospital, where he was fed ipecac to induce vomiting.”

  • Others like Ivan Moody use music as almost a therapy for alcoholism like his recent issues and leaving mid concert to get help. “It’s no secret that Five Finger Death Punch frontman Ivan Moody has struggled with addiction. His battles with alcohol were even a major focus of a recent lawsuit brought against the band by their current label, Prospect Park.”
    Read More: Ivan moody’s addiction
  • As stated before the Rapper NF had a bad childhood and has used Rap as his outlet for the pain like he explains in the song “Therapy Session”

Religion in Metal music and Rap.

  • Everyone has a different view of religion but here are some cases of religious views of metal artists.
  • Ivan Moody of 5FDP sings “I won’t bow to something that I’ve never seen can’t believe in something that doesn’t believe in me. I’m not blood of your blood, I’m no son of your god, I’ve no faith in your fate, still I find salvation” from “Salvation” Ivan talks about how he doesn’t believe in the average god.  Ivan also sings “I spoke to God today and she said that she’s ashamed.” from “Wrong Side of Heaven” stating that he believes that god could be a female.
  • Other bands like Godsmack for example, have songs like “Bad Religion” stating “Looking down on as I beat you It’s bad religion, from a broken nation.” saying that the war over religions is getting out of hand.
  • Another band Black Veil Brides has a song called “Faithless” where Andy Biersack sings “Even when I fall down to my knees,
I never say a prayer I don’t believe, And I don’t wanna look up to the Son, But I will never be the faithless one.” saying that he believes in a god but only refers to it as “the son”.
  • this is the only topic that Country dominates in but there are few, if any Country songs that speak about any other religion than Christianity, and Rap also has a select few artists like the NF and Witt Lowry that rap about religion, but also only Christianity, these genres only speak of Christianity because they are all from America, where as Metal is all over the world there are bands from Norway, Germany, The U.S.A and many others.  Now tell me when was the last time you heard of a Rapper in Norway, or a Country band in Germany, Never.

Case closed.

“Metal is one of the only genres that uses bad or controversial topics to help or motivate people against those topics.” False, jazz musician Charles Mingus’s Fables of Faubus lyrics call out a racists governor thus also bringing up controversial topics in order to bring about change. Yes I agree that some pop and rap is trash.

I’m sorry to disagree, I love the metal genre but I think mongolian throat singing stays triumphant within the music world. It is the only genre that keeps on giving. Metal will die out because making albums in exhausting for musicians.

I don’t. I prefer a simple gong sort of sound.

Although I personally don’t like heavy metal music, many of the points you brought up about the genre are exactly similar to jazz, which would have been cool if mentioned in this article, considering the similarities. Both genres play completely authentic instruments and refrain from the use of autotune, as you mentioned, and have deep emotional connections and messages that are expressed when playing their music. I understand your post was specifically about rock, but you made it seem as if it was the only genre that still focuses on the theoretical and emotional aspect of the music being made. On a side note, I was a little bummed you didn’t mention Lecrae when you talked about christian rappers, who happens to be the best dude ever. Overall, very interesting post. Nice job!

I agree, also the writer didn’t take in account that jazz came first therefore we could take argue that is what makes jazz more authentic than heavy metal.

Although this blog was persuasive, I think you could have done a better job of not being SO negative about every other music genre. There were very little positives if any on any other genre. It’s just kind of depressing to read a negative post. Thanks for sharing your viewpoint though.
